While we cannot get enough of AVEN and East LA, there is a lot to explore over on the West end of Los Angeles. That especially goes for Santa Monica.
Santa Monica Health and Wellness
Ocean Avenue and the Stairs
When you see LA depicted in film, more often than not you are going to see the streets of SM. In particular Ocean Ave, which is perfect for an outdoor run. Located alongside the Santa Monica beach, running along this flat trail will feel as though you are moving throughout a home. Start out underneath the palm trees, run through an outdoor terrace, and even through a rose garden. There are also multiple gateways that you can take to run alongside the beach. Speaking of, keep an eye out for the iconic Santa Monica stairs. As far as parking goes, we suggest parking along Entrada, West Channel or Mesa. For easy Google maps access, type in the following address: Adelaide Dr and 4th St. Los Angeles.
There are a number of juice shops all throughout LA but none of them can beat Kreation on 3rd Street. This organic juicery includes the best juices for detoxing or keeping off that on-coming cold. They also carry some dependable health-boost powders, seeds, and proteins. You can even customize your juice and smoothies!
Santa Monica Restaurants
Speaking of health and wellness, one of the healthiest spots in town for brunch, lunch or dinner is True Food. This fast-casual dining experience includes modern chic interiors and a very considerate menu. Meaning, their menu is all fresh ingredients with little-known superfoods and tons of gluten-free and vegan options. Some of their staple dishes are the edamame dumplings and the spaghetti squash casserole.
Located in the historic 1929 clock tower building is The Misfit. Another farm to table restaurant and bar, The Misfit vibe is irresistible with its 20th century Paris interiors. Best of all, they are only steps away from the beach. Our favorite ways to enjoy The Misfit is for day drinking or for a late-night bite after your night out on the town. Also, for those wondering, their crispy brussel sprouts are incredible!
Now onto something sweeter, Sidecar Doughnuts. As it states on their website, they offer “perfectly handcrafted doughnuts that are the freshest in the world.” Their flavors are very inventive and, you can expect surprise seasonal flavors every month. Their staple doughnuts are Butter & Salt or the Huckleberry doughnut. Plus, they make a mean coffee. And on a healthy note, they serve gluten-free doughnuts as well.
Santa Monica bars
Some say that all the gay bars are over in WeHo. They are wrong. In fact, we believe that the best gay bar in LA is found in SM. It is called The Birdcage. Located on the top floor of The Victorian, The Birdcage has a chill atmosphere with chic decor that is a throwback to ’80s and ’90s Miami or Palm Springs. But that is not all! The Birdcage includes beneath it two other floors with a different vibe, one of which is reminiscent of a basement from a highschool band.
Esters Wine Shop and Bar
Last but certainly not least, Esters Wine Shop and Bar. Located in a refurbished 1937 Art Deco building, this cozy wine shop has delicious champagne and small bites. Aside from the wine, our favorite thing on the menu is their lavender almonds. And, our suggested days to stop by are on Mondays for No Corkage Monday where happy hour prices go all night long. Or on the weekend for Boozy Brunch from 10 am to 2:30 pm.
And one last pro-tip, for anyone looking to have a full out happy hour with no traffic, SM is an easy ride over on the new Metro Line. Have fun!
